Course: ARCH203 Integrated Studio, Fall 2025, UC Berkeley
Berkeley Fire Station + Community Center

Instructor: Dan Spegiel
Project completed in collaboration with Nathan Schuppert

Resting at the base of the Berkeley Hills in the shadow of the Claremont Hotel standing as a monument to the 1991 Oakland Firestorm (which destroyed over 3,000 homes and killed 25 people), a former gas station site becomes the testing ground for a radical proposition: what if a fire station accepted the innevitability of fire? This project transforms civic infrastructure into a living organism—one that protects, makes, and remakes itself in an endless cycle of construction and evolution.

Positioned at the precise threshold between urban Berkeley and the combustible hillside, the building confronts the region's fire ecology head-on. Its architecture is both fortress and workshop, emergency responder and community collaborator.
